1. About GHGCalculate
GHGCalculate (GHGCalculate.com) is operated by Jonas Dalgaard Nielsen, a private individual based in Ontario, Canada. GHGCalculate is a platform that helps your company estimate greenhouse gas emissions utilizing publicly available emission factors (or emission intensities) from non-proprietary databases. GHGCalculate serves an educational purpose, making available emission factors and methods to quantify greenhouse gas emissions based on the user's input data. See the Terms of Use for details.
Jonas Dalgaard Nielsen, operating as GHGCalculate, is the data controller responsible for your personal information.

2. What Information GHGCalculate Collects
Information you provide directly:
- Account information: username, email address, company name, NAICS sector classification
- Emissions data: activity descriptions, quantities, units, and associated emission estimates you enter into the Platform ("Calculation Data")
- Comments that you enter when adding an entry to your calculation
- Communications: any messages you send to GHGCalculate by email
Information collected automatically:
- Session data: login timestamps, session duration (for security and the 12-hour session expiry)
- Last-seen timestamps: the time of your most recent Platform activity (used to display active user counts in aggregate, superuser-visible analytics only)
- Server logs: IP address, browser type, pages visited — retained briefly for security and diagnostic purposes
GHGCalculate does not collect payment card data, government identification, or sensitive personal information as defined under PIPEDA.
3. How GHGCalculate Uses Your Information

GHGCalculate does not use your Calculation Data for purposes other than providing the Platform to you. GHGCalculate does not use your personal information for automated decision-making or profiling.
4. Data Sharing and Third Parties
GHGCalculate does not sell your personal information or share with third parties the data you enter into the Platform to estimate emissions from company activities. Data is shared only as follows:
- Hosting infrastructure: Your data is stored on servers in Finland provided by Hetzner Online GmbH (EU), subject to appropriate data transfer safeguards.
- Email delivery: Transactional emails (verification codes, password resets) are sent via Zoho Mail (zoho.com). Only your email address is shared for this purpose.
- Legal requirements: GHGCalculate may disclose information where required by law, court order, or to protect the rights and safety of GHGCalculate or others.
All third-party service providers are required to handle your information securely and in accordance with applicable privacy law.
5. Data Retention

After account deletion, your personal information is removed from active systems. Anonymized aggregate data (e.g., total platform entry counts) may be retained indefinitely as it is no longer linked to you.
6. Your Rights Under PIPEDA
Under Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), you have the right to:
- Access the personal information GHGCalculate holds about you;
- Correct inaccurate or incomplete information;
- Withdraw consent to certain processing (note: withdrawal may affect your ability to use the Platform);
- Request deletion of your account and associated personal data.
To exercise any of these rights, contact GHGCalculate at contact@ghgcalculate.com. Identity verification may be required before processing your request.
7. Cookies and Sessions
The Platform uses a single session cookie to keep you logged in. This cookie:
- Is strictly necessary for Platform operation;
- Expires after 12 hours of inactivity;
- Does not track you across other websites;
- Is not used for advertising.
GHGCalculate does not use analytics cookies (e.g., Google Analytics), advertising cookies, or third-party tracking technologies.
8. Security
GHGCalculate implements reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your personal information, including:
- Passwords stored using Django's built-in hashing (PBKDF2 with SHA-256)
- HTTPS enforced for all connections
- Email verification required for new accounts
- Session expiry after 12 hours of inactivity
No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure. In the event of a data breach affecting your rights and freedoms, GHGCalculate will notify you as required by applicable law.
9. Children's Privacy
The Platform is not directed at individuals under the age of 18. GHGCalculate does not knowingly collect personal information from minors. If you become aware that a minor has provided personal information to GHGCalculate, please contact contact@ghgcalculate.com and steps will be taken to delete it promptly.
10. International Data Transfers
The hosting provider (Hetzner Online GmbH) operates servers in the European Union. By using the Platform, you acknowledge that your data may be transferred to and stored in the EU. Such transfers are subject to standard contractual clauses or other lawful transfer mechanisms.
11. Changes to This Policy
GHGCalculate may update this Privacy Policy periodically. When updated, the "Last Updated" date at the top will be revised and, for material changes, you will be notified by email. Your continued use of the Platform after any update constitutes acceptance of the revised Policy.
